Spotlight on Chicago Burlesque

Chicago has a prolific and ever-evolving burlesque scene. In the past couple of years, tons of quality performers have appeared - and I've been fortunate to work with many of them. As you know, a sense of community within the art scene is very important to me.

I believe that one of the ways our Chicago burlesque community will prosper is for each of us to acknowledge, admire, and applaud those in the community who go above and beyond what is considered "status quo." When we are aware of - and understand why - an artist is successful in their approach toward their art, we are given an opportunity to become better artists ourselves. In order to determine what works on stage, we need to encourage a dialogue of honest feedback.

There are many different approaches to burlesque within Chicago, ranging from classic "wink & a smile" acts to savage performance art. Although many may argue about what the term "burlesque" means, there's no doubt that when an artist is successful at their art, they have the power to influence the artists around them. When we take responsibility for the quality of the acts we present on stage - regardless of the style - we show that we respect our fellow artists and our audience. It is our duty to challenge the artists in our community to up their game.
