New to Burlesque? Start Here: Your Complete Beginner’s Guide
Welcome.
Whether you’re here because you saw an incredible burlesque show, stumbled across a vintage photograph, watched a movie, or have quietly wondered for years if burlesque might be for you—you’ve come to the right place.
If you’ve never taken a class, don’t know where to begin, or have questions you’re almost afraid to ask, you’re not alone. Almost every performer I’ve ever met started exactly where you are now: curious, excited, and wondering if they belonged.
The short answer?
You do.
Burlesque has always been about much more than costumes or taking off clothes. At its heart, it’s an art form built on storytelling, confidence, creativity, humor, music, craftsmanship, and genuine human connection.
Whether your goal is to build confidence, reconnect with your body, meet creative people, perform on stage, or simply try something completely outside your comfort zone, this guide will help you take your first step.
What Is Burlesque?
Burlesque is a theatrical performance art that combines dance, comedy, character, music, costume, and storytelling.
Its roots stretch back hundreds of years to theatrical parody and Victorian stage productions before evolving through vaudeville, cabaret, and the glamorous Golden Age of American burlesque.
Today’s performers continue that tradition while bringing their own personalities, styles, and stories to the stage.

Is Burlesque Right for Me?
One of the biggest misconceptions about burlesque is that you need to already be confident before you begin.
In reality, many people come to burlesque because they’re looking for exactly the opposite.
You might be here because you want to:
- Feel more comfortable in your own skin.
- Build confidence after a major life change.
- Find a creative outlet.
- Meet supportive, encouraging people.
- Move your body in a joyful way.
- Learn to own a room instead of shrinking inside it.
- Perform on stage someday—or simply do something that scares you a little.
Burlesque welcomes all ages, backgrounds, professions, body types, and experience levels.
There is no “burlesque body.”
There is no age limit on self-expression.
There is no requirement to be fearless before you begin.

What Happens in Your First Burlesque Class?
The first class surprises most people.
Instead of pressure, they usually discover laughter.
Instead of judgment, they find encouragement.
Instead of competition, they find community.
A beginner-friendly burlesque class typically includes:
- Gentle warm-ups
- Simple movement exercises
- Musicality
- Stage presence
- Confidence-building activities
- Walking with intention
- Character exploration
- A few laughs along the way
No one expects perfection.
The goal isn’t to become someone else.
It’s to become more fully yourself.

What Should I Wear?
One of the most common questions is also the easiest to answer.
Wear something comfortable.
Yoga pants.
Leggings.
A tank top.
A T-shirt.
Dancewear if you already own it.
Bring water and wear something you can move comfortably in.
High heels are optional.
Feather boas are optional.
Corsets are definitely optional.
You do not need an elaborate costume to begin.
The glamour comes later.
First, we learn the foundations.
Do I Need Dance Experience?
Not at all.
Many students have never taken a dance class before.
Others arrive with backgrounds in ballet, theater, pole, ballroom, acting, circus arts, or musical theatre.
Burlesque isn’t about executing perfect choreography.
It’s about communication.
Confidence.
Presence.
Connection.
Those are skills anyone can develop.
The Biggest Myths About Burlesque
“I have to take my clothes off.”
No.
Burlesque is an art form—not a requirement to undress.
Many performers create acts that reveal very little, while others embrace classic striptease traditions. Every performer chooses what feels authentic to them.
“I’m too old.”
You’re not.
People discover burlesque in their twenties, thirties, forties, fifties, sixties, seventies, and beyond.
Confidence has no expiration date.
“I need the perfect body.”
There isn’t one.
The qualities audiences remember most are charisma, storytelling, humor, musicality, and authenticity—not measurements.
“I’m too shy.”
Many performers started out convinced they’d never set foot on a stage.
Confidence isn’t a prerequisite.
It’s something you build.
Why Burlesque Changes People
Over the years, I’ve watched students arrive carrying all kinds of stories.
Some are celebrating.
Some are healing.
Some have spent years putting everyone else first.
Some simply miss having a creative outlet.
Again and again, I see the same thing happen.
They stand a little taller.
They make eye contact a little longer.
They laugh more easily.
They stop apologizing for taking up space.
The confidence built in burlesque doesn’t stay on the stage.
It follows people into job interviews, relationships, presentations, creative projects, parenting, and everyday life.
That’s one of the reasons I love teaching it.
Want to Perform?
If performing is your goal, wonderful.
If it isn’t, that’s wonderful too.
Some students perform professionally.
Some perform once.
Some never perform publicly at all.
Every path is valid.
When you’re ready, you’ll learn about:
- Stage names
- Character development
- Costume design
- Music selection
- Hair and makeup
- Producing acts
- Performance etiquette
- Rehearsal techniques
- Backstage preparation
- Building confidence under pressure
